Your Newborn Care Specialist Services

A newborn care specialist (some also say “baby nurse” though she is not a nurse) is a newborn expert that helps care for your baby the first weeks or months after birth. They are able to ease your burden so you can sleep better at night and take naps during the day. They ensure breastfeeding is going well and help you learn how to take care of your baby. What Is The Difference Between A Newborn Care Specialist
And A Postpartum Doula?

Many parents think hiring help after baby arrives is a luxury—but for a lot of families, it’s a game changer. This is especially true for first-time parents, families with multiples, those without nearby family, or couples juggling work and baby care.

The early days after birth can be overwhelming. There’s so much to learn—like how to soothe a crying baby or get them to sleep. Many new parents also struggle with sleep deprivation, trying to balance nighttime feedings with daytime work. It’s exhausting, and it can take a toll on your well-being.

Getting help isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a smart way to care for yourself and your baby. Whether it’s hiring a postpartum doula, a night nurse, or leaning on trusted friends and family, support can make all the difference during this transformative time.

Understanding the difference between a postpartum doula and a newborn care specialist helps you find the right kind of support, whether you need help with your recovery, your baby, or both.

Postpartum Doula Newborn Care Specialist
Primary Focus Holistic support for the entire family unit, meal prep (except during overnight care) Newborn care
Session Types Day (4-8hrs a day) or Night (8hrs per night) Usually nights (12 hrs) though a couple of baby specialists offer daytime support, too.

Hourly Rate Starting at $42/hr up to $120/hr depending on the doulas certifications and experience Starting at $36/hr up to $45/hr depending on the baby specialists experience
Insurance Coverage Usually covered under fertility benefits such as Carrot Fertility, Maven, Progyny. Sometimes covered under health insurance. Check with your provider to see if you can get reimbursed. Not typically covered
Best for Families looking for holistic support, breastfeeding mothers, mothers who would like support in postpartum recovery and nutrition, parents looking to build confidence in their new roles. Parents who want to focus mainly on rest and help specifically with baby, families with a more limited budget, families not planning on breastfeeding or not needing breastfeeding support. Of course all night nannies support breastfeeding though most don’t have a lactation certification.

A combination would also be possible: Some families hire a postpartum doula for daytime support and a night nanny who comes in for overnights.

About the “NY Baby” Newborn Care Specialists

Stephanie Heintzeler knows just the right qualities to look for in a newborn care specialist as she has worked with expecting and new parents for over 20 years. A former midwife in Germany turned doula and lactation consultant, she constantly gets questions regarding birth support, classes, baby specialists or postpartum doulas so it was only natural to add baby nurses to the NY Baby team.
